A leaking head gasket can be quite the problem. If you don’t want to take your car in for a proper head gasket replacement, you can try fixing it on your own with engine block sealer. Scroll down to Step 1 to learn how to fix your head gasket.

Leaving the Sealer in for a Week

  1. Drain cooling system of all antifreeze. Refill with water, leaving just enough room for the product. Add all of the product to the cooling system.
  2. Leave the radiator cap loose. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 15 minutes. Tighten the radiator cap and idle 15 additional minutes. Turn off the engine and feel the top and bottom radiator hoses. If the bottom hose is cold, loosen the radiator cap when it is safe to do so and top off the cooling system with water.
  3. Re-start the engine with the radiator cap loose. Bring the idle up to 2500 to 3000 RPMs for five minutes or so. Tighten the radiator cap and drive the car 5 to 10 miles (8.0 to 16.1 km), and then re-test the radiator hose temperatures. If both hoses feel hot in the first test, or after driving in the second test, you’re done. If not, you may have an air pocket. Some cars have bleeder valves for just this purpose. Use them. If you know how to bleed the air out, do that now.
  4. Leave the product in the cooling system for one or two weeks.
  5. Drain all of the product out of the cooling system. Do not use a chemical flush.
  6. Re-fill the cooling system with no more than 50% antifreeze (the less the antifreeze, the better,) and the rest distilled water. Do not use Extended Life or Dexcool.
